Description
GBR 209 (230 in total built) is an exceptionally well-prepared Melges 32, campaigned and continually developed to a level rarely seen on the brokerage market. Built in 2009 and one of the later Melges 32 hulls produced, she has undergone an extensive programme of optimisation, refurbishment and performance upgrades since 2021, resulting in a boat that is fully race-ready, fully measured and proven at the front of the fleet.Widely regarded as one of the most successful one-design sportboats ever built, the Melges 32 combines exhilarating performance with surprisingly refined engineering. Carbon spars, lifting keel, retractable bowsprit and asymmetric sail plan create a boat capable of reaching speeds well into the twenties while remaining competitive under strict one-design rules.GBR 209 has benefited from significant investment including new PBO standing rigging, complete running rigging replacement, Sailmon electronics, hull and appendage fairing, keel bolt replacement, new Harken deck hardware and a comprehensive cosmetic refurbishment. Fully measured and weighed for the 2023 World Championships, she remains fully compliant with Melges 32 class regulations and ready to return to the racecourse immediately.HISTORYHistory, Development & MaintenancePurchased by her current owner in late 2021, GBR 209 underwent a substantial programme of works aimed at returning the boat to the highest competitive standard.Winter 2021 / 2022Hull polished and cosmetic gelcoat repairs completedNew sheets and running rigging throughoutStanchions, pushpit and pulpit removed and refinishedSystems overhaulHydraulic trailer system rebuiltFoam deck grip fittedSailmon electronics package installedCarbon mast bracket installedCarbon wand fitted for Sailmon systemWinter 2022 / 2023Mast, boom and spreaders refinished in satin black AwlgripHull stripped and underwater surfaces rebuiltBottom epoxy removedHull re-fairedHull re-epoxiedWet sanded to 3000 gritPolished race finishKeel & Rudder ProgrammeKeel removedKeel faired to profileKeel re-epoxiedWet sanded to 3000 gritPolished finishRudder treated to identical processNew rudder bearings fittedOriginal rudder bearings retained as sparesRigging & HardwareNew Armare PBO standing rigging fittedNew running rigging throughoutForestay load cell installedNew keel bolts installedAll deck hardware removedDeck fittings resealed and reinstalledNew Harken primary sheet winches fittedNew Harken carbon headfoil fittedWeight reduction programme undertaken throughout vesselAdditionally, a complete second set of the latest Armare PBO standing rigging remains unused and still in its original packaging.CONSTRUCTIONBuilderMelges Performance SailboatsDesignReichel / Pugh DesignStrict One Design ClassConstructionVacuum infused composite constructionLightweight racing laminate structureCarbon fibre spar packageCarbon bowspritCarbon rudder stockHigh aspect lifting keelBulb keel configurationHull FinishWhite topsidesProfessionally faired race bottomEpoxy coated underwater profileWet sanded and polished race finishKeelLifting keel arrangementNew keel bolts fittedProfessionally faired foil sectionRudderHigh aspect balanced rudderNew rudder bearings fittedProfessionally faired foil sectionRIG AND SAILSMast & BoomCarbon fibre mastAluminium boomCarbon spreadersSatin black Awlgrip finishCarbon bowspritStanding RiggingArmare PBO standing riggingReplaced 2022/23Additional unused Armare PBO rigging package includedRunning RiggingReplaced throughoutModern low-stretch racing specificationSail HandlingHarken carbon headfoilHarken deck hardwareHarken primary sheet winchesRetractable bowsprit systemForestay load cellSail InventoryQuantum Racing Sails (Purchased New 2022)MainsailsQuantum mainsailHeadsailsQuantum J1Quantum J2Quantum J3SpinnakersQuantum A1Quantum A2One Sails Inventory (Purchased New 2022)One Sails A1 FlatOne Sails J4Additional Circuit SailsPurchased from the international circuit in 2022 and reported to remain in very good condition:Quantum mainsailQuantum J1Quantum J2North Sails A2DECK GEARCockpitThe Melges 32 cockpit is designed entirely around efficient crew movement and weight placement.Features include:Open racing cockpitTwin primary winchesCarbon tiller extensionCentre mainsheet systemRecessed control layoutsHiking strap arrangementsNon-slip foam deck gripRace optimised deck layoutDeck HardwareHarken deck systemsHarken sheet winchesCarbon bowsprit controlsFlush deck fittingsRe-sealed deck hardware throughoutLifelines & RailsLightweight racing stanchionsRacing pushpitRacing pulpitRefinished hardwareELECTRICAL SYSTEMSNavigation & PerformanceSailmon instrumentation packageSailmon processor systemCarbon mast-mounted Sailmon wandSailmon displaysRace performance analytics systemVisible photographs also show:Cockpit-mounted display unitsGPS performance trackingIntegrated race navigation platformThe Sailmon system represents a substantial upgrade over the original package and is widely regarded as one of the leading performance systems currently used within competitive one-design fleets.MECHANICAL SYSTEMSAuxiliary PowerYamaha 9.9hp four-stroke outboardEngine well installationDedicated engine controlsSystemsBilge pumping systemElectrical switching panelBattery management systemSailmon network integrationTRAILERTrailerBalbi galvanised hydraulic tilting trailerHydraulic systems overhauledNew hydraulic components fittedIntegrated trailer storage boxTransport EquipmentFull transport cover packageHull transport protectionSpar transport arrangementsDedicated trailer boxCREDENTIALSGBR 209 is not simply a refurbished Melges 32.
