Description

Yacht Overview "Spartan" is a gem of a yacht and a rare find in that she is one single owner from new. She has not been raced or rallied hard and is in excellent condition. This is a LOT OF BOAT at a very keen price and even better, she is a stunning head turner. The deck layout has evolved to incorporate a highly efficient sail set up with inner and outer jib tracks, self tacking 100% jib and larger over lapper. As with all Rod Johnstone designed boats, she is a joy to sail with the best of the "J-Boat DNA". This superb yacht just eats up the miles for fast effortless cruising and is a sailors yacht."Spartan" has been maintained for offshore cruising over the years and the Volvo D2 diesel and Saildrive are replacements installed about 7 years ago. The old antifouling was blasted off in 2023 and repainted anew.Berthed afloat at Bucklers Hard in the Beaulieu River, viewings are easy to arrange and this lovely yacht will not disappoint."Spartan" is antifouled and topside polished (both in 2025) and is truly ready to go for a 2026 Summer season.UK Vat Paid. This boat is not EU Tax Paid. Yacht InformationBoat Name: SPARTANYear: 2001Builder: J Boats in FranceDesigner: Rod JohnstoneEngine: Volvo D2 50hp (new replacement fitted 7 years ago)Keel: Fin with bulb & spade rudderHull: Dark Blue Awlgrip epoxy painted hullLocation: Beaulieu River DimensionsLOA: 40 ft 0 in / 12.19mLWL: 34 ft 5 in / 10.52mBeam: 12 ft 0 in / 3.66mDraft: 7ft 0 in / 2.13mDisplacement: 6305kgFuel capacity: 102 litresWater capacity: 284 litres EngineEngine Type: Volvo D2 saildrivePower: 50hp dieselReplacement: Present engine and sail drive were replaced with new circa 7 years agoEngine hours: 361 (in Nov 2024)Maintenance: Fully maintained by Volvo approved agents every year since new and runs perfectly. In Spring 2025 the saildrive was serviced, oil was reported as crystal clear and the main engine service is booked for May 2025, after going back into the water. Systems and NavigationRaytheon instruments covering all the usual functions - log, speed, depth, windRaytheon autopilotStand alone GPSAIS system plus a separate new transmit and receive system which outputs in this case to an iPadSSB receiverVHF radioConventional radiosNavtex weather systemSmall inverter for 240v electronicsEPIRBExtra engine battery Deck EquipmentCarbon mastCarbon boomStanding rod rigging & turnbuckles have been replaced twice in the life of the boat, so now on her third set - all supplied and fitted by Ocean Rigging in Lymington. With only gentle sailing by an elderly couple in recent years it is 9 years since the last change however the current set is still on lower mileage in smoother water than the previous ones which gave no trouble.Hydraulic backstay adjusterHalyards and sheets are Spectra whenever appropriateBolt on self tacking system giving a narrower sheeting angleJib sheets still use the old tracks for open sea sailingWider sheeting points for close reaching with a Blade jib - this track should not be an obstruction racing the boat with standard rig and if so wished could simply be unbolted to remove itAdditional Genoa tracks on the rail for more flexible use of 150% genoasMainsail cover and recently replaced Jib coverSprayhoodWheel coverThin Vectran lazy jacks fitted, could be removed easily without leaving residual fittingsExtra toe railsMooring lines and fendersAnchor, chain and warp4 man life raft (service date needs checking, but in good order) SailsSpartan has mainly been sailed with 100% blade jib and main with a furling Code Zero with Harken furler, and set up for short handed use. All the sails are by SANDERS apart from the new North jib.Peter Sanders carbon laminate, fully battened mainsail about 10 yrs. old but still sound and in shapeNorth% blade jib effectively unusedSanders Code Zero about 10 years old but light useStorm jib 23 years old but unusedLarge and small asymmetric spinnakers 23 years oldSpinnaker squeezer which could do with a new sockAn older Code Zero, larger and in slightly heavier clothHarken furling unit for Code Zero InteriorUsed as a cruising boat she was not significantly detuned and the main departure from basic or full race specification were:5-6 berths with a double forecabin, double aft cabin and two singles in the saloonBookshelves and lockers in the saloon in place of pilot berths. This is a bespoke optionBespoke stand up chart tableSmall diesel fired cabin heating systemLarger cooker with oven2 x stainless steel sinksHot & cold water systemTop loader fridgeSeparate heads compartment with marine w.c. washbasin and shower Owners Comments"Spartan" has been used for short handed long distance sailing going three times down to the Canaries, three times out to the Azores, a circuit of the Mediterranean, Ireland, Scotland etc. and basically her fitout reflects that. She had had no insurance claims during her lifetime and has only sailed a handful of low key races which, in the main, she won. She has been an excellent yacht which I have owned from new, but the time has sadly come to pass her on to a new owner who can realise her potential for new adventures. DisclaimerThe Company offers the details of this vessel in good faith but cannot guarantee or warrant the accuracy of this information nor warrant the condition of the vessel.
