Description
Striking with a distinctive silhouette, the Fifty Fifty ketch — a phrase coined by the yacht designer W.G. McBryde — has been attracting the admiration of Scottish sailors for over 90 years. McBryde, though not one of the most famous Scottish yacht designers of his era, was well established as a designer of traditional power and sailing craft. Built for the family who owned the Gleniffer Marine Engine Manufacturing Company in Glasgow, the yacht was launched under the name GLENIFFER before reverting to the original intended name, GLENGOUR. Purchased by the present owners in 2001, both highly experienced with wooden yachts, GLENGOUR has benefited from extensive re-fitting, refinishing, and sympathetic modernisation over the past 25 years. All work has been carried out to the highest standards, with an attention to detail rarely seen in a commercially restored vessel. A comprehensive history file accompanies the boat including the original lines plans. This remarkable piece of Scottish maritime history is now seeking her next custodian. On file and available by request we hold a collection of additional photographs and a summary of the extensive work completed during the current ownership and a 2026 condition survey. Lying afloat on her mooring in Crinan Harbour, GLENGOUR is available for viewing strictly by prior appointment. DESIGNER'S COMMENTS: Considering this craft as a sailing yacht, her sail spread is not large, but it is very efficient and one that is exceptionally easy to handle. She is able to go to windward and remarkably fast for a vessel of this type. Her firm bilges give good stability. The hull is a good compromise and excellent accommodation for four persons has been planned. Wheel steering is arranged in the companion deckhouse, and a tiller aft for use when under sail’ W.G. McBryde, ‘Forty Designs of Motor and Sailing Yachts’ A full copy of this book is included within the Glengour historical archive. OWNERS COMMENT: Glengour’s own website celebrates the essence of the boat and provides more information on McBryde’s unique design and on the builders, James Adam & Sons. There are insights into the boat’s rich history and snippets about the books, magazine articles, documents and plans that belong with the boat. You can see some interesting photos on the Shed Page from our extensive Restoration. Other webpages give a sense of the luxury of life aboard and how relaxing and fulfilling it feels to go cruising on Glengour. The Sailing and Updates Pages (with short video) give an idea of how well Glengour is performing with her recent feathering props and new sails. Glengour is on the National Historic Ships Register and a search on their site for Glengour will bring up the boat’s DETAILS page, which has an active link to the boat’s website. https://yachtglengour.wixsite.com/1934 In excellent condition with an airy wheelhouse, stunning cabins, twin engines and delightful sailing ability, Glengour is a rare gem. A stylish and rewarding boat to be part of. Or, as renowned naval architect and yacht designer, Uffa Fox, put it after some time spent aboard “…there is no doubt that McBryde has produced a wonderful little vessel in Glengour.” CONSTRUCTION Hull Construction: Carvel pitch pine planking Oak stem and stern posts Oak wood keel Sawn oak frames Steamed ribs in elm Planking copper clenched to ribs and fastened to frames with bronze screws Oak wood floors with one iroko laminated floor in way of the main mast step Solid iroko mast step Topsides finished in ivory gloss paint Underwater hull finished in navy antifouling with red boot top Deck & Superstructure Construction: Douglas fir beam shelf and carlings Douglas fir deck beams with oak deck beams in way of the main mast Traditional laid teak deck, stepped in the way of wheelhouse Traditional teak skylight hatch forward of the wheelhouse Teak wheelhouse superstructure and aft coachroof Wheelhouse and coachroof sides finished in a gloss varnish Wheelhouse and coachroof tops epoxy sheathed and finished in cream, non-slip deck paint Keel & Rudder: Lead ballast keel Bronze keel bolts Two new keel bolts fitted in way of mast step Full depth, keel-hung bronze plate rudder MACHINERY Port Engine & Gearbox: Yanmar 3GMF marine diesel engine 22.5hp 3 cylinder, naturally aspirated, indirectly cooled marine diesel engine Mechanical reversing marine gearbox Single lever morse control Auxiliary hydraulic pump for windlass operation Starboard Engine & Gearbox: Yanmar 3GMF marine diesel engine 22.5hp 3 cylinder, naturally aspirated, indirectly cooled marine diesel engine Mechanical reversing marine gearbox Single lever morse control Maintenance & Performance: Engines serviced during winter lay-up 2024-25 Exhaust systems rebuilt in current ownership with refurbished injection elbows, new hoses from engines to waterlocks and new stainless steel transom outlets Cruising speed under engine 6kts Propulsion & Steering: Aquadrive thrust bearing units for both engine, both refurbished in current ownership Stainless steel propshafts 2x Darglow FeatherStream, 3 blade, feathering propellers (2019) Custom-designed, single-station hydraulic wheel steering system fitted in current ownership Steering wheel to port side of wheelhouse Tiller steering on aft deck, hydraulic system can be isolated ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS Voltage systems: 12vDC onboard power system Battery Banks: Port Battery – 1x 12vDC, 110Ah, lead acid, port engine only Starboard Battery Bank – 2x 12vDC, 110Ah, lead acid, starboard engine and domestics (2021) Charging: ENAG Switch Mode battery charger 230vAC – 12vDC, 12amp Alternators: Engine mounted alternators on each engine 12vDC Other Electrical: Searchlight PLUMBING SYSTEMS Fresh Water: Pressurised hot and cold water systems Mixer tap in galley Hot and cold lever taps in heads Hot water provided from calorifier, heated by engine cooling water Bilge Pumps: Manual Bilge Pump – Henderson Mark V Electric Bilge Pump – Rule-Mate 750gph with manual and auto switching Deck Wash: Flojet saltwater deck wash pump Plug-in deck connector beneath port side deck step TANKAGE Fuel: Twin diesel tanks Stainless steel tank construction Approximate tank capacity 159ltrs / 35 Gal each Total fuel tank capacity 318ltrs / 70 Gal Fresh Water: Twin fresh water tanks Stainless steel tank construction Approximate tank capacity 159ltrs / 35 Gal each Total water tank capacity 318ltrs / 70 Gal Tank Monitoring: Dip sticks to ascertain levels in all tanks.
